Google Analytics Is About to See a Lot More of Your Shopify Store

GA4 Shopify Update New Ecommerce Events

As certified GA4 Experts and an official Shopify Partner, keeping our clients ahead of platform changes is part of the job — and Google just announced one worth flagging. Starting August 17, 2026, the Google & YouTube app will change how it sends shopping data from Shopify stores into Google Analytics 4. The short version: you’re about to get a much more complete picture of the shopper journey. Here’s what’s actually changing, and what — if anything — you need to do about it.

Four New Events Are Being Captured

The update expands the range of shopper actions the app reports to GA4. Four new standard events join your existing data:

Shopper Action GA4 Event Triggered
Viewing a collection page view_item_list
Removing an item from the cart remove_from_cart
Opening the shopping cart view_cart
Entering shipping or address details at checkout add_shipping_info

Together, these fill in gaps that previously left a blind spot between browsing and checkout — exactly the stretch of the funnel where most drop-off analysis happens.

A New Parameter Makes Filtering Easier

Every event sent under this update will carry a new parameter, shopify_event_name, holding the original Shopify event name that triggered it — for example collection_viewed or cart_viewed. In practice, this is what lets you build clean GA4 filters or explorations that isolate app-sourced events from anything else feeding your property.

What This Means for Your Account

  • Better data: more granular events and parameters mean sharper segmentation, funnel analysis, and optimization — with no development work required on your end.
  • Billing: GA4 360 customers may see a change in monthly billing, since the added event volume can push properties into a higher tier depending on site activity.
  • Filtering control: the new shopify_event_name parameter gives you a clean way to isolate or exclude this app’s events without disturbing the rest of your data.

THE ZIGMA TAKE

This is a genuinely useful update for anyone using Shopify’s Google & YouTube app to feed GA4 — but “more data” only helps if your reports and dashboards are built to use it. If you’re on GA4 360, it’s worth checking projected event volume against your current tier before August 17 rather than being surprised on the next invoice.

Do You Need to Do Anything?

No action is required to start receiving the additional events and parameters — the change applies automatically on August 17. If you’d rather exclude specific new event data from your reports, the shopify_event_name parameter can be used to build a filter in GA4. Google has published a help center article with step-by-step instructions for setting that up.

It’s also possible to disconnect Google Analytics entirely from within the Google & YouTube app settings in Shopify admin — but we’d steer most merchants away from that. Disconnecting cuts off purchase events and every other data point the integration currently sends, not just the new additions, which significantly limits your ability to monitor performance and shopper behavior going forward.
